I hate to say this, but Hawkgirl (and most of the recent Hawkman run leading into the title-change) has been a major disappointment.
That is tough to say because I'm a big fan of Walt Simonson's work. It goes without saying his Thor is the standard to which all others aspire. His very brief run on the Fantastic Four was quite good. His work on X-Factor was great. His run on Orion was outstanding (and this was a title I had absolutely NO interest in, but I picked it up because of Simonson and then couldn't stop reading it because it was that good).
He is only writing Hawkgirl while the art has been handled by Howard Chaykin (who has quite the history of his own as a comic creator).
The stories thus far have been uninspired. And the art hasn't been quite as good as I expected (not bad, but nothing special either).
I'm just starting to wonder if an on-going Hawkman (or Hawkgirl) title is a good idea. It doesn't really seem DC has a good idea what they want to do with the book. Geoff John's run wasn't anything spectacular. Palmiotti and Gray started off well, but their run sputtered out. And Simonson and Chaykin haven't done anything to lift this title out of the funk it is in.
There hasn't really been a top notch run since Tim Truman's Hawkworld (and DC pretty much retconned that whole thing). _________________ Bender: Hey chumps. I heard you were on the ass end of an ass-kickin'... |
